About the event

Come learn to carve a spoon! This class will start with safety and knife grip instruction as well as a demonstration of roughing out spoon blanks with an axe. Students will be able to practice on some small scraps of birch before beginning to carve their own eating or cooking spoon. The cost of this course includes a Mora 106 carving knife and a Mora 164 hook knife for all students.

This class is taught by Green Woodworker Joel Paul of 13 Stars Design in Stratham, NH who uses traditional tools to make chairs, bowls, spoons, and other wooden objects that recall a bygone age. A particular focus is hand carved spoons, which are the gateway to green woodworking and can be made using just a few special tools - the carving axe, straight knife and curved spoon knife. Keeping the craft tradition alive and fostering a mentality of respect for our natural environment is his ultimate goal.

Limited to 8 participants.

Cost: $130

Classes will all be taught outside, with a backup plan in case of rain. The location is rustic, and participants should be comfortable being outdoors and working on the ground for most of the day. Address and directions will be shared with participants prior to the workshop.

Please bring your own lunch and a blanket or chair to sit on. Contact Ellie Brown ejb.615@gmail.com with any questions.

COVID guidelines: All instruction will be taking place outdoors and socially distanced. We ask that all participants please wear a mask when social distancing is not possible (i.e. one on one instruction). We will be in touch prior to each workshop if anything changes.
