Time & Location
Jul 16, 2022, 10:00 AM – Jul 17, 2022, 4:00 PM
Foster Farm, 22 Loud Lane, Warner, NH, USA
About the event
We will be making small berry/harvesting baskets with leather shoulder straps. The first day of the workshop will focus on material processing from log to finished splint. We may even explore dyeing some of the weaving material with natural dyes. On the second day, we will focus mainly on weaving and may do some work with carving rims and handles as well. Please note - this workshop requires significant hand strength.
Sherry Gould is a Warner, New Hampshire basket maker and certified member of the Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe. She has apprenticed under Abenaki basketmakers, Newt Washburn and Jeanne Brink and was also the first Abenaki basket maker to be juried by the League of NH Craftsmen in the state of New Hampshire. Sherry hopes to continue the tradition of basket making, an important part of Abenaki culture, into the next generation and beyond.
Linda Hartman lives in Warner, NH and is also a basketmaker and teacher. She has done many demos and workshops in previous years at Canterbury Shaker Village, Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum, and others. She weaves a variety of styles of baskets and is eager to share this skill with the next generation of makers. She has also been experimenting recently with various ways of using natural dyes to dye the ash splints that she weaves with.
Limited to 12 participants.
Cost: $200
NOTE** This is a two-day workshop. Both days will be from 10 am-4 pm.Â
